MLB roundup: Twins run win streak to 10 after DH sweep of O’s

Kody Clemens, a relative newcomer to Minnesota, smashed a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Twins rallied to beat the host Baltimore Orioles 8-6 in the second game of a doubleheader sweep Wednesday.

Trevor Larnach hit a two-run homer and Willi Castro launched a solo shot for the Twins, who earned the ninth 10-game winning streak in franchise history.

Cedric Mullins blasted a grand slam and Heston Kjerstad followed with a home run to cap a six-run third for the Orioles, who have lost eight of their last 10 games. Of the doubleheader’s 18 innings, they scored in only two of them.

Both of Baltimore’s home runs in the second game came with two outs off Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson. Mullins, Gunnar Henderson and Emmanuel Rivera each had two hits for the Orioles, who led 6-4 after three innings.

Kody Funderburk (1-0) was the winning pitcher with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Cole Sands worked the ninth for his first save of the season and the sixth in 103 career relief appearances.

Twins 6, Orioles 3 (Game 1)

Christian Vazquez poked a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth as Minnesota held off host Baltimore to extend its winning streak to nine games.

Brooks Lee opened the Twins’ four-run fourth with a solo homer. Lee, Vazquez, Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach each posted two hits. Starter Bailey Ober allowed three runs and two hits over 4 2/3 innings.

The Orioles took a 3-0 lead in the third as Gunnar Henderson cracked a two-run homer. Henderson and Ryan Mountcastle split Baltimore’s four hits. Starter Dean Kremer (3-5) allowed four runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 (Game 1)

Bryce Harper’s 999th career RBI drove in the go-ahead run as host Philadelphia ended St. Louis’ nine-game winning streak in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the seventh on Ivan Herrera’s double and Jordan Walker’s RBI single, but the Phillies responded in their half of the seventh with Bryson Stott’s RBI single and Harper’s RBI single off Steven Matz (2-1).

Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo (4-0) struck out six in his seven-inning performance while allowing just one run and five hits. Cardinals starter Erick Fedde pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up three hits.

Cardinals 14, Phillies 7 (Game 2)

Alec Burleson drove in four runs to fuel visiting St. Louis to a victory over Philadelphia.

Burleson, Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn homered for St. Louis. The Cardinals didn’t let the disappointment of its winning streak ending linger, though, as they racked up 19 hits in the nightcap, including four by Winn and three apiece by Ivan Herrera, Brendan Donovan and Burleson.

Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola (1-7) allowed nine runs and 12 hits — both career highs — in 3 2/3 innings, as his ERA ballooned to 6.16. Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm homered for the Phillies.

Brewers 9, Guardians 5

Logan Henderson won his second straight start to begin his MLB career and Rhys Hoskins had four hits, including a home run, and five RBIs as Milwaukee defeated host Cleveland 9-5 to avoid the series sweep.

Henderson (2-0) allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over five innings. William Contreras had three hits and four runs, and Jake Bauers contributed two hits and two RBIs in the win.

Guardians reliever Tim Herrin (3-1) gave up two runs and recorded just one out in the sixth to earn the loss. Jose Ramirez hit a three-run homer to cut the lead to 7-5 and Kyle Manzardo also homered for Cleveland.

Diamondbacks 8, Giants 7

Ketel Marte homered twice and Eugenio Suarez belted a three-run shot as Arizona completed a road-series win over San Francisco.

The Diamondbacks jumped on Giants starter Jordan Hicks for an early 3-0 lead. A solo homer by Marte as the game’s second batter highlighted the early output. Arizona appeared to blow the game open with Suarez’s homer in the third and Marte’s second homer in the fourth.

But San Francisco scored two runs in the fourth on a double by Heliot Ramos and twice more in the seventh when Jung Hoo Lee belted his sixth homer of the season. The Giants also made things interesting in the ninth before Shelby Miller got Christian Koss to pop out to center field to end it.

Yankees 3, Mariners 2

Aaron Judge led off the eighth inning with a tie-breaking home run as New York rallied to defeat host Seattle.

Paul Goldschmidt also homered for the Yankees, who took two of three games in the series between division leaders. Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton got the victory and Luke Weaver struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

Judge went deep off Mariners reliever Carlos Vargas (1-3), lining a 444-foot shot to left-center field. It was the MLB-leading 15th homer of the season for Judge, who also tops the majors in batting average (.412) and RBIs (41). Yankees leadoff hitter Trent Grisham was robbed of a homer by Seattle center fielder Julio Rodriguez with a leaping catch at the wall in the first inning.

Blue Jays 3, Rays 1

Alejandro Kirk hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and Toronto defeated visiting Tampa Bay.

Kirk and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each had two hits to help the Blue Jays draw even in the three-game series. Brandon Lowe had two hits for the Rays. Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt allowed one run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot (2-5) pitched around two first-inning singles and did not allow another hit until Kirk led off the fifth with a single to right. Pepiot finished six innings and allowed three runs on six hits.

Pirates 4, Mets 0

Matt Gorski and Jared Triolo each hit two-run homers for visiting Pittsburgh, which salvaged the finale of a three-game series with a win over New York.

The Pirates improved to 3-3 since manager Don Kelly took over for the fired Derek Shelton last Thursday. Each of Pittsburgh’s first five games under Kelly were decided by one run.

The Mets were blanked for just the second time this season as their three-game winning streak was snapped.

Tigers 6, Red Sox 5

Pinch hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as host Detroit completed a three-game sweep with a victory over Boston.

Andy Ibanez drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on an error prior to Malloy’s two-out hit off Aroldis Chapman (2-2). Riley Greene had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Trey Sweeney drove in two runs. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal went 6 1/3 innings and was charged with five runs and seven hits to go with 11 strikeouts.

Alex Bregman went 3-for-4 with a homer to lead Boston.

White Sox 4, Reds 2

Davis Martin threw 6 2/3 quality innings and Lenyn Sosa and Michael A. Taylor homered, propelling visiting Chicago to a victory over Cincinnati.

Martin (2-4) allowed just one run on seven hits and no walks. Luis Robert Jr. reached base three times and drove in a run for the White Sox, who won a third straight game for the first time this year.

Chicago rookie reliever Mike Vasil worked around Will Benson’s one-out walk in the ninth to post his first career save. Cincinnati has lost nine of its last 11.

Marlins 3, Cubs 1

Kyle Stowers belted two solo homers and Ryan Weathers tossed five strong innings in his season debut to lift visiting Miami to a victory over Chicago.

Stowers, who also had a triple, went deep in the second and fourth innings for his third multi-homer performance in his last 13 games. Weathers (1-0) allowed one run on two hits in his first start since being sidelined with a left flexor muscle strain in March during spring training.

Miami rookie Agustin Ramirez also launched a solo shot among his two hits. Xavier Edwards added a single to extend his hitting streak to eight games for the Marlins, who salvaged the finale of the three-game series.

Nationals 5, Braves 4

James Wood doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and visiting Washington rallied for a win against Atlanta, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

With Washington trailing 4-3 to start the eighth inning, CJ Abrams drew a leadoff walk. He went to third on pitcher Enyel De Los Santos’ errant pickoff throw and scored on Ahmed Rosario’s bloop single. Wood doubled to the wall in right, scoring pinch runner Nasim Nunez to give the Nationals the lead.

Stuart Fairchild had two hits for Atlanta, which had won three of four.

Rangers 8, Rockies 3

Wyatt Langford and Adolis Garcia blasted two-run home runs and Jake Burger added a two-run double as host Texas rolled past struggling Colorado to sweep the three-game interleague series.

Texas has won five straight games for the second time this season while the Rockies have lost 11 of their past 12 outings. Patrick Corbin (3-2) was solid for Texas, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings while striking out a season-high nine batters.

Antonio Senzatela (1-7), the first of five Colorado pitchers, allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Rockies are 0-3 under interim manager Warren Schaeffer.

Astros 4, Royals 3

Jeremy Pena finished 4-for-4 with a tie-breaking single in the eighth inning to help the host Houston claim a victory over Kansas City in the rubber match of the three-game series.

Pena snapped a 3-3 tie with his single to left off Royals closer Carlos Estevez, driving home Mauricio Dubon. Dubon’s double scored pinch runner Chas McCormick from first base and chased Royals right-hander Michael Lorenzen (3-4). Dubon went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

Astros closer Josh Hader earned his 10th save by working around a two-out walk to Bobby Witt Jr.

Padres 5, Angels 1

Xander Bogaerts blasted a three-run homer and Randy Vasquez pitched six effective innings for the victory as San Diego stopped visiting Los Angeles.

Vasquez (3-3) won his second straight start, allowing one run and four hits. Three relievers finished up as San Diego improved to 16-5 at home. The Padres won the final two contests in the three-game set against the Angels.

Los Angeles starter Kyle Hendricks (1-5) gave up three runs on five hits over six innings.

Dodgers 9, Athletics 3

Shohei Ohtani, Andy Pages, Hyeseong Kim and Max Muncy each hit home runs and Los Angeles evened a three-game series against the visiting Athletics.

Miguel Rojas delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth inning, while right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-3) gave up three runs on four hits in six innings. With the victory, the reigning World Series-champion Dodgers are just 5-5 since a seven-game winning streak ended May 4.

Tyler Soderstrom hit a home run for the A’s, who are 14-8 in road games even after the loss.
